How To Start Your Day Right

For most of us, our morning routine tends to be non-existent. We’re either rushing out the door or hitting the snooze button and sleeping for way longer than we should. How you start your day determines how the rest of your day will pan out. We’re all about creating healthy habits so that’s why establishing a good routine is a must!

Wake up earlier

Being rushed is never a good feeling and it can put you in a bad mood. Make sure you’re going to bed at a reasonable hour and if you’re extra organised, you can even prepare for your morning the night before! It’s also amazing how much you can accomplish by waking up earlier. Not sure how to become a morning person? Read our tips here!

Meditate

Add a few minutes of meditation to your routine. If you’re a beginner, there are plenty of apps to guide you through this (Our fave is Headspace). Practising mindfulness is so important for our health, yet we often forget to do this. Doing a simple 5 minute meditation session can help relieve stress and all the other emotions that we come face to face with.

We have a few steps for you to follow:

  1. Find somewhere comfortable to sit up; on a chair on the floor, it’s completely up to you. (Note: don’t do it lying down, you’ll fall asleep… we learned the hard way.)
  2. Relax your body and don’t tense any muscles.
  3. Close your eyes.
  4. Take a deep breath by inhaling through your nose for four counts, exhaling through your mouth for four counts.
  5. Focus on counting your breath – it’s normal for your mind to wander so when this happens, bring your awareness back to your breath.

Drink a glass of water

Normally we think to reach for a hot cup of coffee first thing but we should really be drinking a glass of water after waking up as our bodies become dehydrated while we sleep… That’s also why your pee is a dark colour in the morning. (TMI? Okay we’ll stop!) Having water has the same affect as coffee, just with even more health benefits. You can even add a squeeze of lemon to alkalise your body.

Workout and stretch

Get your workout over and done with in the morning so you don’t have to think about it later on. This will also boost your energy and metabolism making you more productive throughout your day. Stretching after a workout helps with increasing your blood flow to your muscles. To avoid getting bored of working out, try a new activity or exercise each time.

Eat breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal and it gives you energy to help you get through your day. Choose something healthy and not full of sugar. We love having eggs and toast or if you’ve got a sweet tooth, try making chia seed pudding or porridge.

Brush your teeth

Get rid of that morning breath. Your teeth and dentist (and anyone you come in contact with) will thank you later :)

You don’t have to implement all these steps straight away especially if you’re not an early riser. Start with one or two and let us know how you go!
